A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
