The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
