Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release
But, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained little new information.
